About The Institute

Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) was founded in 1955 at Mesra by industrialist and philanthropist Mr. B. M. Birla. Initially affiliated with Patna University until 1960, it later became part of Ranchi University. In 1986, BIT was granted the status of a deemed university under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. BIT made history in 1964 by becoming the first institute in India to establish a Department of Space Engineering and Rocketry. To support small manufacturing businesses run by its graduates, BIT launched the Small Industries Research and Development Organization (SIRDO) in 1970. This initiative was recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and expanded to other institutes, under the Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (STEP) program. The first STEP was approved and established at BIT Mesra. In 2007, the Entrepreneurship Development Cell, operated by students, was established. To provide financial backing, BIT partnered with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to create the SIDBI Centre for Innovation and Incubation (SCII), offering temporary funding for select new entrepreneurs, startups, and technology-based organizations. BIT Mesra also boasts a PARAM 10000 supercomputer as the core of its IT infrastructure. At present, The Institute is offering various under graduate, post graduate, and Ph.D. programs in various disciplines of technology as well as five Year Integrated M. Sc. programs. The Institute has an excellent placement record. There is a constant process of up gradation and innovativeness in the academics which has resulted in bagging prestigious industrial and consultancy projects in the recent past.
